Kirjahaaste Kieltenopelta - Books and burnet roses

Yksi... Kaksi...

Hello all! This long post is almost entirely in Finnish because I'll answer to a book challenge forwarded to me by Rita of Kieltenopen kotiblogi. This challenge is not about reading more or new books but about books we have read... and want to read again.

When I was a child I read everything I could get my hands on, books for children and adults as well. Nowadays I have much less time for reading and read mainly non-fiction.

If I have time, I enjoy reading many kinds of literature. Once in Italy, I wanted to read something sweet and entertaining and went to a bookshop to look for some novels of Anne of Green Gables and Emily series.   "But they are books for children!", one of the saleswomen "whispered" audibly. (And yet these books were written for all ages.) "Perhaps la signora is Canadian!", answered the other one equally audibly . Naturally, I was very pleased to be thought to be a Canadian. :)

It was lovely to live and buy books in Italy. Still a big market, you can find many and well-stocked bookshops there, plenty of titles offered, with affordable prices.

The Color Kittens by Margaret Wise Brown (excellently translated into Finnish by Kirsi Kunnas) was is one of my big favourites.

The photos of book covers are from the Internet. At the bottom of this post, there are some flower photos (of mine). The burnet roses were blooming when I started to write this post...

***

Kieltenopen kotiblogin Rita haastoi  -  jo toukokuun lopussa, pahoittelen hitauttani!  -  minut mukaan hauskaan kirjahaasteeseen, jossa kerrotaan tärkeistä kirjakokemuksista.

1. Kirja josta pidin lapsena: Olin innokas lukija. Harrastekirjojen lisäksi luin seikkailuja ja hevoskirjoja, kansansatuja ja aikuisten kaunokirjallisuutta. Lastenkirjoista on erityisesti jäänyt mieleen Tammen Kultaisten Kirjojen Maalarikissat. Kirsi Kunnaksen käännös hurmaa joka kerta uudelleen.

"Voi uneksia kuusta, joka saarta valaisee,
ja kultaisesta puusta, josta omenat putoilee.

Ja lähellä pääsiäismunien maailmankolkkaa
he näkivät munien tanssivan iloista polkkaa."

Garth Sundemin 2006 ilmestynyt [Geek Logik] (suom. [Insinöörin logiikka]) muuttaa ongelmat helposti laskettaviksi yhtälöiksi. (Kääntäjätiimi on soveltanut tekstin Suomen oloihin varsin vapaasti.)

Tekisinkö väitöskirjan? Lähtisinkö politiikkaan? Pitäisikö mennä lääkäriin? Ostaako vai eikö?

Esimerkki: Olenko liian pätevä?

A book tip: [Geek Logik] by Garth Sundem. Workman Publishing, New York, NY, 2006.

Easier Living through Mathematics. Example: Are you too good for your job?

Reflections on Photography (ranskankielinen alkuteos ilmestyi vuonna 1980).

Ehkä kyseessä on onnistunut elämyssiirto?"

Another book tip: Camera Lucida. Reflections on Photography by Roland Barthes. Originally published in French as La Chambre Claire (1980). Vintage Books, London, 2000.

Barthes (1915 - 80) studied French literature and classics at the University of Paris. After teaching French abroad, he joined the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique, where he devoted himself to research in sociology and lexicology.

As an amateur photographer, I find fascinating Barthes' notion of punctum, the detail that attracts or distresses the spectator. Barthes tells that when he started to write the book, he thought he "could distinguish a field of cultural interest (the studium) from that unexpected flash which sometimes crosses this field and which I called the punctum. I now know that exists another punctum [...] than the 'detail'. This new punctum, which is no longer of form but of intensity, is Time, the lacerating emphasis of the noeme ('that-has-been'), its pure representation".

For Barthes, photographs of landscape (urban or country) must be habitable. This longing to inhabit derives "from a kind of second sight which seems to bear me forward to a utopian time, or to carry me back to somewhere in myself: a double movement which Baudelaire celebrated in Invitation au voyage and La Vie antérieure. Looking at these landscapes of predilection, it is as if I were certain of having been there or of going there."

Does this ever happen to you when you look at a photo?  Do you find it easy to understand why some photos attract you?

Palkinnoksi postauksen loppuun lukeneille: Tämän kesän juhannusruusuja. :)
Näissä oli muuten tavallista enemmän tuholaisia tänä vuonna.

Maintenant, je vous souhaite une belle journée! Bisous!

  1. A very thought provoking post. Sadly I could not translate your Finnish book reviews.
Very interesting what you say about Barthes, "photographs of landscape (urban or country) must be habitable"
Does this depend on the person looking at it? We did a Myers Briggs course at work to see what type of personality you are and how it affects how you work. One of the deciders in the final interview was how I looked at a photograph. Some people describe just what they see, a tree and a river. I almost imagine myself in the picture with the sights and sounds that surround me. I would describe a beautiful sunny day with a gently flowing river!
Your roses are gorgeous. My Lady Emma Hamilton has flowered continually throughout the Summer and is still producing beautifully scented blooms.
Your question regarding the conifer I sadly cannot answer. It is in a neighbours garden. A very old lady owned the house and garden 30 years ago and her and her husband loved to plant different species of trees, so it must be over 60 years old. There is also a beautiful old oak tree at the bottom of the garden that the red kite sits in occasionally too.
Have a wonderful week Sara :)x

Yes, I too have noticed that the translate widget here doesn't help in translating from Finnish into English, because a part of the text is already in English. One can always copy-paste an extract to https://translate.google.com/ and see what comes out. Probably something with not much sense... :)
I don't know much about Myers Briggs typology, but I believe we are now speaking about people who tend to interpret and add meaning rather than just noticing facts? (More Intuition than Sensing.) Isn't it funny how different our "preferences" can be? I too could easily "hear" and "smell" when seeing a photo, at least in some situations. It would be interesting to take that test.
I'm sure your roses are fabulous, and your neighbour's garden sounds like a lovely place as well.
      Big hugs! xx

    2. Hi Sara, Thank you for your reply, I'll have a go at copying and pasting and see what comes out!
Simon's reply below did make me chuckle! It does look as though the kitten sitting down is having a terrible tantrum!
Have a wonderful weekend with hugs from me to you :)

  4. Tätä monipuolista postausta kannatti odottaa ! :) Kylläpä on kiinnostavia ja ajatuksia herättäviä näkökohtia ja oivallisia lukuvinkkejä. Olen aikanaan lukenut Maalarikissoja pikkuveljelleni.

The (wonderful) illustrations are perhaps the main reason why I'm writing about children's books again and again. Did you ever publish a post about your vintage books? It would be lovely to see them!

  9. I recognise 'The Colour Kittens'. I just love the creativity of today's children's books.
I loved the Anne of Green Gables series as a child. It was such a joy to visit Lucy Montgomery's Cavendish National Historic Site, when I visited Prince Edward Island for my son's wedding 2 years ago.
Now I enjoy peoples travel tales and biographies.
The beauty of your roses, heartens my soul.

  11. I am interested in photos and photography as more than the picture - the idea of inhabiting or going beyond into story is what captures me. I read vociferously as a child and still continue on that path as an old lady. Those roses feel romantic to me and serene in their white purity.
